Formaldehyde symptoms: what exposure actually feels like

At the levels a renovated Singapore home actually reaches, formaldehyde causes irritation — not poisoning. That distinction matters, because searching these symptoms turns up material written about industrial accidents at concentrations a home never sees. The realistic picture is milder and more insidious: symptoms that look like a mild allergy, are easy to attribute to haze or air-conditioning, and quietly persist for months because nobody connects them to the new wardrobes.

The common symptoms

  • Eyes — stinging, watering, grittiness; often the first and most reliable sign
  • Nose and throat — dryness, scratchiness, blocked or runny nose, a persistent need to clear the throat
  • Head — dull headaches, difficulty concentrating, unusual tiredness in the late afternoon and evening at home
  • Airways — coughing, chest tightness, and noticeably worse control of existing asthma
  • Skin — dryness or flare-ups of existing eczema in some people
  • Sleep — waking with a dry throat or blocked nose, in a bedroom with new built-ins and the door closed

What happens at what level

Readings below are in mg/m³ with the equivalent in ppm, since meters report both. The WHO indoor guideline — also the figure used in Singapore's SS 554 standard — is 0.1 mg/m³ (0.08 ppm), set with a deliberate margin below where irritation begins.

The pattern that distinguishes it

Individually, none of these symptoms points to formaldehyde — they overlap with dust allergy, haze, a dry air-conditioned room and an ordinary virus. The pattern is what distinguishes it. Formaldehyde is worth suspecting when several of these hold:

  • Symptoms improve when you are away — better at the office, on holiday, at your parents' place — and return within hours of coming home. This is the single most useful signal.
  • More than one person in the household is affected, including pets in some cases.
  • It began after a renovation, a move into a newly fitted flat, or a delivery of new furniture — typically within days to weeks.
  • It is worse in the morning, after a night in a closed, air-conditioned bedroom with built-in wardrobes.
  • It is worse in hot weather or after the flat has been shut up all day — heat and humidity increase how fast the resin releases formaldehyde.

Conversely: symptoms that started before the renovation, affect only one household member with a known allergy, or track outdoor haze readings are more likely to be something else.

Why you cannot smell your way to safety

Formaldehyde is a poor self-warning chemical. Individual odour thresholds vary widely and overlap the range where irritation already begins, so it is entirely possible to smell nothing in a home reading above the guideline. Two further effects compound it: the nose acclimates within hours, which is why residents stop noticing what visitors remark on the moment they walk in — and the sharp solvent smell people associate with "new reno" is mostly other VOCs from paint and adhesive, which clear in weeks while formaldehyde carries on for years. Who is more affected

Children breathe more air per kilogram of body weight than adults and spend more time at floor level, and infants sleep long hours in enclosed rooms with new carpentry. People with asthma or existing airway disease react at lower concentrations. Pregnancy raises understandable questions, which are addressed on their own terms in formaldehyde, babies and pregnancy. None of this means harm has occurred — it means the guideline exists for a reason and these groups are why the margin is set where it is.

What the cancer classification does and does not mean

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies formaldehyde as a Group 1 carcinogen, its highest hazard category, associated principally with nasopharyngeal cancer and with myeloid leukaemia. That is a real finding and not one to wave away.

It also needs context. Group 1 describes how confident science is that the substance can cause cancer, not how much risk any given exposure carries — the same category contains sunlight and processed meat. The evidence behind it comes overwhelmingly from occupational cohorts: industrial workers, embalmers and anatomists exposed for years at concentrations well above what a home reaches. Applying those findings directly to a flat with new wardrobes overstates what the studies actually measured.

The proportionate conclusion is the unglamorous one: sustained elevated readings are worth fixing, and fixing them is straightforward. Panic is not warranted, and neither is ignoring a reading of 0.4 mg/m³ in a nursery.

What to do if this sounds like your home

  1. Ventilate hard. Open everything, run fans, leave wardrobe and drawer doors open. Free, and it is the largest single lever in the first weeks.
  2. Measure before concluding anything. Symptoms are suggestive, not diagnostic, and plenty of homes turn out to be within guideline. Testing costs S$180 and takes under an hour.
